Se lanseerattiin aikoinaan mukavaksi perheautoksi ja se oli GS:n serkkuja. Nykyisin ne alkavat olla jo todella harvinaisia. Mistä automallista mahtaakaan olle kyse? Citroën BX julkistettiin lokakuussa 1982. Sen jälkeen alkoi valtatie, jonka varrelle mahtui lukuisia muunnelmia.
Marcello Gandinin muotoilema BX sai vaikutteita ainakin brittiläisestä, 1977-mallisesta Reliant FW11 -autosta sekä vuoden 1979 Volvo Tundra -konseptiautosta. Monikäyttömallin lisäksi tunnettiin farmari. Nopeammasta päästä olivat BX Sport, GT, 4TC, GTi sekä 16V.
Pohjalevy oli sama, jota sovellettiin vuonna 1987 Peugeot 405:ssä. BX:n keskeisenä ominaisuutena oli kaasunestejousitus sekä laajamittainen muovisten koriosien käyttö konepellissä, takaluukussa sekä lokasuojissa.
Moottoreina olivat 1,4-, 1,6- ja 1,9-litraiset bensiinimoottorit, joiden lisäksi Italiassa, Portugalissa ja Kreikassa BX oli saatavilla jopa 1,1-litraisena. Näistä 1,1 ja 1,4 olivat vanhoja Peugeot/Renault-moottoreita, jotka juontuivat Peugeot 104:ään ja Renault 14 -malliin. XUD-sarjan diesel julkistettiin vuonna 1984.
BX ei ollut täysin tuntematon näky myöskään MM-ralleissa. B-ryhmän BX 4TC (1986) ei kuitenkaan koskaan oikein saavuttanut menestystä.
