Corvette 6.2 V8 Grand Sport: hyvätapainen ohjus.

Pyydettäessä luettelemaan todellisia, kiistattomia urheiluautoja, lista on helposti kovin eurooppalainen: Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche ja loputtomasti pienempiä toimijoita McLarenista Melkusiin. Saattaapa mukaan päästä myös joku japanilainen, kuten Nissan GTR ja Lexus LFA. Corvette heiluttaa tässä seurassa urheasti amerikan lippua. Muita sikäläisiä urheiluautoja ei vanhalla mantereella juuri tunneta ja eurooppalaiset snobit laittavat muskeliautot omaan kategoriaansa.
Neljä pyöreää takavaloa ovat muodostuneet Corvetten tavaramerkiksi. Tosin ne ovat pitkään olleet pyöreähköjä eikä geometrisia ympyröitä.
Meillä viime vuodet harmaan ja yksityisen tuonnin varassa olleen Corvetten ympärillä on tauon jälkeen virallistakin kuhinaa ja sitä myöden meille tarjoutui tilaisuus maistella Corvetten viimeisintä variaatiota, Grand Sportia.
Coupé-mallin kattopala on irrotettavissa. Kyseessä on siis targa-tyyppinen ratkaisu, jossa haluttaessa vain taivas on kattona mutta turvakaari ja takalasi suojana. Toisena korivaihtoehtona on kokonaan piiloon taittuvalla, sähkötoimisella kangaskatolla varustettu Convertible. Kangaskaton saa vain 436-hevosvoimaisen peruskahdeksikon kera, jos tuollaista tehopakkausta nyt perusmoottoriksi voi edes urheiluauton yhteydessä nimittää. Oikeastaan korimalleja on kolmaskin, sillä tehokkaammissa malleissa kattopala on kiinteä eli kyseessä on oikea umpiauto.
Mittarien viisarit tervehtivät käynnistäessä heilahtamalla koko asteikon edestakaisin. Muuten ohjaamossa on hömpötysten sijaan keskitytty tarkoituksenmukaisuuteen.
Malliston aloittavat sulavalinjaiset Coupé ja Convertible. Vuosimallin 2011 uutuudet, Grand Sportit ovat samalla moottorilla, mutta kori on lihaksikkaampi ja jarrut suuremmat. Grand Sportille ulkoisen olemuksensa lainanneessa Z06:ssa on peräti seitsemänlitrainen kasikone (512 hv ja 637 Nm) ja järeämpää alustan palikkaa. Malliston huipulla komeilee yli kahden perus-Corvetten verran maksava ZR1, jonka mekaanisesti ahdettu kahdeksikko antaa 647 hevosvoimaa ja 820 newtonmetrin maksimiväännön. Sen suorituskykyä kuvataan 3,6 sekunnin kiihtyvyydellä sataseen ja 330 km/h huippunopeudella. Z06 ja ZR1 ovat aina kuusivaihteisella manuaalilla kun 436-heppaiset saa myös itsestäänvaihtavalla.
Suorituskyky huomioiden istuimet vaikuttavat kovin normaaleilta, mukavilta sporttijakkaroilta. Oven ja korkean kardaanitunnelin välissä pysyisi kyllä paikallaan ilman istuimen sivutukeakin.
Mutta eivät vähäisemmätkään Corvettet mitään laiskoja ole. Koejettu Grand Sport antaa perusmallin kanssa samat suoritusarvot. Sataseen 4,4 sekuntia ja huippunopeutta 306. Numerot tietäen ohjaamoon liukuessa odottaa vaativaa ajoelämystä. Toisin käy. Kytkin on helppo, eikä liian raskas, ja kuusipykäläistä manuaalivaihteistoa komennetaan lyhyen täsmällisin ja sujuvin kepin liikkein. Taajamanopeuksilla Corvette rullaa eteenpäin tyhjäkäyntikierroksilla ilman minkäänlaisia protesteja. Ja kaasua painaessa kone laittaa maiseman pikakelaukselle aivan kuin kaasun junttaaminen pohjaan 700 käyntinopeudella olisi aivan normaalia. Corvetten moottorin seurassa on helppo uskoavanhaa väittämää, ettei mikään voita kuutiotuumia, siis suurta iskutilavuutta.
8 sylinteriä, 6,2 litraa, 436 hevosvoimaa 5900 kierroksella ja 580 newtonmetriä vääntöä 4600 kierroksella. Se riittää meistä useimmille. Muille tarjotaan tehokkaampaa Z06:tta ja ZR1:tä.
Kiihtyvyys on huimaa, muttei millään tavalla pelottavaa, sillä Corvettella on homma tiukasti hanskassa. Päällimmäiseksi ajatukseksi jää sivistyneisyys. Vaikka kumia voi halutessaan polttaa loputtomiin, Corvetten rattiin uskaltaisi päästää kenet tahansa, niin rauhallisesti ja loogisesti se käyttäytyy. Mutta pitäisikö sen olla käytökseltään tuittupäisempi? Ei, kyllä urheiluautotkin saavat nykyisin olla kuljettajalle nöyriä ja miellyttäviä. Mutta moottorilta toivoisi rajumpia ääniä. Kyllä Corvette, amerikkalaisten urheiluautojen suurin ikoni, saisi jytistää naapurit hereille yöllä kotiin tullessa.
Grand Sportissa on etujarruina perusmallista poiketen kookkaat 6-mäntäiset satulat ja 355-milliset (+30 mm), rei’itetyt levyt.
Takana levyn halkaisijaa on kasvatettu peräti 35 milliä lukemaan 340 ja jarrupaloja puristetaan neljän männän voimalla.
Vuodesta 1953 hurmanneen Corvetten nykyinen kuudes sukupolvi tuli vuonna 2004. Porras sukupolvien välillä on siis keskimäärin kymmenen vuotta, mutta tässäkin tahti on ollut kiristymään päin. C5 eli vain vuodesta 1997 C6:n tuloon. Tällä logiikalla C6:n tiimalasissa alkaa aika huveta. C7:aa odotetaan nähtäväksi jo ensi vuoden aikana.
Edellinen virallinen Corvetten myyntivuosi meillä oli 2007. Nyt maahantuoja olisi valmiina taas toimimaan. Tarvitaan vain halukas jälleenmyyjä.
Leveämpine lokasuojineen ja näyttävine ilman otto- ja poistoaukkoineen Corvette Grand Sport näyttää voimakkaalta kaikista kuvakulmista.
